What are the Matlock Tapes?

There are two answers to this question - The real answer, and the 'in universe' explanation!

Real Answer:

The Matlock Tapes is a sci-fi/horror audiodrama presented in the form of a 'found-footage' podcast. Created by James Baxter and 'presented' (also episode 2 writer) by Giles Cosgrove, the Matlock Tapes presents old-fashioned sci-fi chiller tales set in the early 1970s. Highly inspired by Hammer and Amicus horror films - particularly Quatermass - we're an entirely independent production that creates these episodes for fun and for the learning experience.

James Baxter plays 'Professor Matlock', though to preserve some mystery, he isn't credited for such at the end of each episode.

'In Universe Answer':

Who is Professor Matlock?

Professor Wilbur Matlock, born 13th July 1921, studied medicine and psychiatry at the University of Oxford but was defined by his private studies into what he referred to as the ‘extra-ordinary’ – Mad science, bad science and even encounters with supernatural and alien creatures. The Professor was studious about keeping records of his experiences. Presented here is just one of his taped recollections, dating from March 1973.
Other than some clean-up of the audio, the tapes are entirely unedited and remain exactly as they were when they were recorded in the 1970s. But please be aware that the audio quality may vary due to the age and condition of the recordings. We have chosen to add some music and sound effects in some places, and occasionally, some narration of supporting documentation and information collected from the news media of the time.
Despite the Professor’s claim that his experiences are “All True,” we can make no guarantees that the events recounted on these tapes actually occurred as described. That... is for you to decide.
